University of the Punjab Aggregate / Merit Calculator
PU's general criteria, and the formula most BS programmes use.
Additional marks are set by your department. There are 20 for Hafiz-e-Quran, 20 to 40 for a relevant elective, and so on. Check your programme's entry in the PU Admission Regulations before you enter a figure.
Guide
How Punjab University merit is calculated
Punjab University does not calculate merit the way most other universities do. Instead of converting each qualification to a percentage and weighting the two, PU pools raw marks into a single ratio: a quarter of your Matric marks plus all of your Intermediate marks, over that same quarter-and-whole of the totals. That ratio is then multiplied by 75, with the PU entry test supplying the remaining 25%.
This means Matric's real weight is not a fixed number. With both papers marked out of 1100, a quarter of Matric works out at about 20% of the academic score and Intermediate at about 80%. That shifts as soon as either total changes. This is why other calculator sites quote figures like 25, 50 and 25. Those are an approximation of the PU formula, not the formula itself, and they give a different answer.
Additional marks are real and can be worth a lot. There are 20 for Hafiz-e-Quran, 20 to 40 for a relevant elective subject, 20 for a relevant diploma, and more. They are added to your earned marks only, and each department sets its own list in the Admission Regulations. Some departments run completely different formulas. Fine Arts and Architecture weight tests and interviews heavily. So treat this as the PU basic criteria, not the last word for every programme.
The Formula
A = (¼ × Matric obtained + Intermediate obtained + Additional marks) ÷ (¼ × Matric total + Intermediate total)Merit = A × 75 + (Entry Test % × 25) ÷ 100or, for 100% academic programmes: Merit = A × 100Transcribed from the PU Admission Regulations, PART-II, 'Basic Criteria for BS (4-Yrs) Program'. PU's own note applies here too: the exact merit is calculated by the department after certain additions and subtractions before merit lists are displayed.
Worked Examples
Example 1: the basic criteria with an entry test
Matric 900 out of 1100, Intermediate 880 out of 1100, 20 additional marks for Hafiz-e-Quran, entry test 70 out of 100.
| Marks earned | (0.25 × 900) + 880 + 20 = 1125 |
|---|---|
| Total marks | (0.25 × 1100) + 1100 = 1375 |
| Academic ratio A | 1125 ÷ 1375 = 0.8182 |
| Academic score (×75) | 0.8182 × 75 = 61.36 |
| Entry test (25%) | 70.00 × 0.25 = 17.50 |
Example 2: a 100% academic programme, no bonus marks
The same Matric and Intermediate marks on a programme with no test weighting.
| Marks earned | (0.25 × 900) + 880 = 1105 |
|---|---|
| Total marks | (0.25 × 1100) + 1100 = 1375 |
| Academic ratio A | 1105 ÷ 1375 = 0.8036 |
| Merit (×100) | 0.8036 × 100 = 80.36 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't PU just use percentage weights like other universities?
Its regulations define merit as a single ratio of pooled marks rather than a weighted sum of two percentages. The two approaches agree only when Matric and Intermediate are marked out of the same total, so we implement PU's actual formula rather than the 25/50/25 approximation you will see quoted elsewhere.
What counts as additional marks?
The regulations list 20 for Hafiz-e-Quran, 20 for a relevant elective subject, 10 for an optional subject, 20 for a relevant diploma, 10 for an additional elective, 5 for an additional optional and 10 for a subject combination, among others. Which ones apply is set by your department, so check your programme's entry before typing a number.
Is the entry test compulsory?
PU's regulations make the pre-admission entry test mandatory for merit and reserved seats at departments that conduct one, with exemptions for foreign, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Sindh, Balochistan and ex-FATA applicants and for candidates with visual impairment. Some programmes are 100% academic. Pick that option in the selector.
Will this match the merit list exactly?
Not necessarily, and PU says the same about its own calculator: the exact merit is worked out by the concerned department after certain additions and subtractions before merit lists are displayed. Several departments also publish their own formulas. Fine Arts and Architecture split merit across the academic record, the PU entry test, a departmental test and an interview.
I am applying to BS 5th Semester. Does this apply?
No. That has its own basic criteria: a quarter of Matric, plus a fifth of FA/FSc, plus the BA/BSc or ADP result. It is a different calculation from the BS 4-year formula above.
Are marks deducted for a gap year?
For BS 5th Semester and equivalent, PU deducts two marks from the academic percentage for each late session, up to five previous sessions, and asks for an affidavit that you were not enrolled elsewhere in the interim. Check your programme's entry for whether a similar rule applies to you.
