How University of the Punjab GPA and CGPA are calculated

The University of the Punjab grades absolutely. Its Semester Rules publish a fixed table mapping percentage marks to a letter and a grade point, so your grade depends only on your own marks, not on how the rest of your class did. That makes the marks-to-grade table genuinely useful before results are announced.

PU does not use the HEC .67 and .33 steps that most Pakistani universities use. Its A- is worth 3.70, its B+ 3.30, its B- 2.70 and its C- 1.70. There is no D+ at all, so the scale drops from C- (1.70) straight to D (1.00). The gap looks small on one course, but it builds up across a degree. This is why a generic calculator will not give you a correct PU CGPA.

Add one semester at a time, one row per course. You get each semester's SGPA together with the running CGPA up to that semester, plus a transcript-style PDF export when you want the whole record in one place.

The Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semesters

PU's rules set the maximum possible GPA at 4.00 and require the CGPA to be computed from individual course grade points, not by averaging semester GPAs. An F scores 0.00 while its credit hours still count.

Worked Examples

Example 1: one semester's SGPA

A 15-credit-hour semester using Punjab University grade points.

Course 1, 3 CH, A (4.00)3 × 4.00 = 12.00
Course 2, 3 CH, A- (3.70)3 × 3.70 = 11.10
Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.30)3 × 3.30 = 9.90
Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00)3 × 3.00 = 9.00
Course 5, 3 CH, C+ (2.30)3 × 2.30 = 6.90
Total grade points12.00 + 11.10 + 9.90 + 9.00 + 6.90 = 48.90
Total credit hours3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15
ResultSGPA = 48.90 ÷ 15 = 3.26

Example 2: how PU's round-up rule moves a grade

A 3-credit course where the combined marks come to 64.1%. PU counts any fraction of a mark as a full mark.

Raw marks64.1 → counted as 65
64 would fall in the C+ band (61 – 64)3 × 2.30 = 6.90
65 falls in the B- band (65 – 69)3 × 2.70 = 8.10
Difference8.10 − 6.90 = 1.20
ResultOne tenth of a mark is worth 1.20 grade points here, so always round up first

University of the Punjab Grading Scale

The University of the Punjab's official marks-to-grade table from its Semester Rules. Because PU grades absolutely, these bands are fixed and you can work out your grade before results are announced. Note the .70/.30 grade points and the absence of a D+ grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Punjab University's A- worth 3.70 and not 3.67?

Because that is what PU's own Semester Rules specify. PU uses US-style .70 and .30 steps throughout: A- 3.70, B+ 3.30, B- 2.70, C+ 2.30 and C- 1.70. Most HEC-aligned universities use .67 and .33 instead. The difference is small on one course but it builds up over a degree, so the right table matters.

How does PU round marks before awarding a grade?

Upward, always. The rules state that a fraction of a mark is counted as one mark, so 64.1 and 64.9 both become 65. This matters more at PU than elsewhere, because several bands are only three or four marks wide. A single tenth of a mark can move you a whole grade.

Is there a D+ grade at Punjab University?

No. The scale runs A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C- and then D (1.00) before F. There is no D+ between C- and D, so anything in the 50–54 band is a straight D worth 1.00 grade points.

Should I average my semester GPAs to get my CGPA?

No, and the PU rules say so directly. The CGPA must be worked out from individual course grade points weighted by credit hours, not by averaging SGPAs. Averaging SGPAs only gives the same answer when every semester has the same credit hours, which is rare. This calculator does it the correct way.

What is the minimum passing mark and CGPA?

50% earns a D (1.00), the lowest passing grade; below 50 is F. For the award of a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor's degree, PU requires a minimum CGPA of 2.00.

I have to repeat an F or D course. How does that affect this calculation?

Students with F and D grades re-register for those courses in a following semester. Enter whichever attempt is counted on your transcript. If the repeat replaced the earlier grade, use the repeat and leave the original out.
